My Story

My Story

My FAMILY

It all began in Winnipeg, Manitoba where I was born. Growing up in a family of 4, I was the youngest child. My parents emigrated here to Canada from Phillippines around 25 years ago, having my older brother already born. They came here as a way to obtain a better future for themselves and my brother,  since in the Phillippines the lifestyle was very inadequate in resources, money, and jobs around that time.

In the Phillippines, my parents were from the province of Pangasinan, where Ilocano was the dialect and Tagalog was the main language. Fortunately, with the continual use my family speaking these languages as I was raised, I've gained the ability to understand and somewhat speak both languages.

FINDING MY TRUE SELF

During my childhood, I was a kid filled with curiosity of the world, freely open to various kinds of friends and activities, and asking my parents lots and lots of questions about everything, like how was I born, or the meaning of a Filipino word they said. It became a struggle to keep my openess especially during grade one where my family and I had to move to BC. I entered a new realm where I left all the friends that I made and all the memories I had back in Winnipeg. I didn't know anyone or any places here in BC at that time and if felt like as if my whole life restarted. The environment, the people, and our home was different. I struggled for many years learning how to accept this vital change in my life, and this fear of a new life led me into a more shy and timid child. Nonetheless, this gradually changed as I entered highschool.

Still, many people, good and bad have influenced me and shaped who I am today. In my elementary school years I always hanged out with classmates of bad influences, being motivated by the intention that I wanted to fit in with the "cool" kids of the school. This led me to develop a mindset that I should just change my self entirely in a way that I can be appreciated by this group of people since they were with me every class. Throughout elementary I had to deal with following others and leaning into their interests whether I liked it or not or if it had good intentions or bad and I had difficulty knowing what person I really wanted to be. However, during highschool my whole character evolved into something more of who I truly am. I was introduced to new friends where I instead picked those who I connected to the most, ones that revealed the best out of me socially and academically. I used to be a shy person who always followed those who seem I could fit in with even if they never really cared about me. But now with the help of a better community around me, I have progressed into a more wise and open-minded person where I chase after my own passions and ambitions, not others.

A NEW CHARACTER

Throughout my years I have grown into having a more independent, organized, and symphathetic character. Learning from my past I've learned how to be capable of being independent by self-governing my choices and allow myself to learn how to solve problems on my own, yet having the awareness to ask for help whenever necessary. When organizing work I establish methods to keep track of what I need to do by using a planner or plan ahead of time. For the quality of being sympathetic, I show this by understanding the feelings of my friends and knowing how to support them in solving their problems. Though at times it may be hard to comfort a person in difficult times, I strive to provide encouragement or emotional help.

The strengths that I see in myself revolve around being modest, responsible, and hardworking. All of these factors have lead me into having a passion of being more involved in the school commutnity, volunteering at mentoring programs, and joining clubs. And with this ambition, it ends to one important goal in my life and that is have to have a positive impact in society, and I believe that by becoming a police officer I can achieve this desire.

Hobbies/INTERESTS

My love for music surfaced after joining the band program at school for 4 straight years. 3 years at Tamanawis Secondary, and my first-year here at Johnston Heights. Learning about the essential principles of working together as a team, and realizing how music can connect people together allowed me to develop valuable collaboration and teamwork skills. Plus, its almost a stress reliever to me since I can express how I feel in the form of music.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography came into play since I've been fond of the aesthetic of taking photos and how it can be utilized to capture cherishing moments. I took photography as a course this year and I've learned numerous techniques such as long exposure, depth of field, perspective, and many more.

"Focus on me"

"Focus on me"

In photography class we had to make a long exposure project using light. Using my creative abilites and thinking outside of the box, I was able to create a collection of photos where the  theme revolves around elements. I'm really proud of the outcome and through all the retakes and patience towards completing the project, I was able to persevere and produce my most favourite photography project.

DANCE

Before grade 10, dance was never really something I thought of as doing as a hobby. I enjoyed watching it and cheering on my friends that danced but that was it. It was not only until last year after learning a dance and then performing it at a talent show at Tamanawis, my interest in dancing began breaking through. My motivation was enhanced through the comments of my friends and teachers saying how I should continue this new talent I've discovered since I demostrated a clear passion and skill in it.

For this reason, I began pursuing this hobby and utilized all my effort to improve each day. I would watch several videos of choreography  made by elite dancers and improving my dancing through learning them. As a way to receive proper guidance and training, at the beginning of the year I joined the PraiseTeam Dance Studio where I was a member of a hip-hop and contemporary dance team.

My hobbies range from playing musical instruments such as guitar and trumpet, to singing, photography, and dancing! I never really got into these only until I was in highschool. I guess, exposure to numerous courses, clubs, and new friends enabled me to discover the talents I never knew I had.
